from Mendota Heights Road north to Delaware Avenue. An open house will be held on
Monday, October 17th from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm at the Mendota Heights City
Hall. This is a chance for all residents to ask questions and voice their support and
concerns about a future trail along Dodd Road. Following the open house, Stantec will
provide the Parks & Recreation Commission with a presentation of their work. Email
Sloan Wallgren at sloanw@mendota-heights.com for more information.

IS IT A BADGE OR A SHIELD?
Deer-vehicle crashes peak in the autumn months, but Minnesota’s large deer
population makes them a safety hazard on the road all year long. Deer crashes
are especially dangerous for motorcyclists — a group which accounted for 16 of
the 19 vehicle-deer related deaths over the last three years.
An important safety tip for drivers is to never veer for deer —
swerving can take a motorist into oncoming traffic or off the road.
Why do some officers call the symbol that is worn on the leŌ side of their chest a shield, and
some call it a badge?
This goes back to the Crusades, when the original guards of the people, the Knights Templar,
escorted the innocent, to visit the Holy Land and kept them safe from the bandits who tried to
steel and rape the travelers. The Knights carried a sword and shield to protect them, and the
travelers from harm if aƩacked.
The symbol of the shield carried over to the later years, as law enforcement was created. The
shield symbol is placed on the leŌ side of the uniform, or over their heart, to symbolize it
protecƟng the officers while they fight the more modern criminals. The Patron Saint Michael
also carries a sword and shield and is known to be the Saint that is the protector of Law
Enforcement. In the days of the cowboys, the symbol was also called a badge, or badge of
honor, for the person who wore it, was to be an honorable person. These two names for the
symbol have conƟnued to be used today and vary from locaƟon to locaƟon throughout the
country.
Motorist Safety Tips to Avoid Deer Crashes
Drive at safe speeds and always be buckled up! Slow down in areas known to have a
large deer population.
Be cautious while driving during dusk or dawn. Deer are most active during sunrise and
sunset, especially during mating season which is in full swing from Oct through Dec.
Pay attention to deer crossing signs. Deer may wander into suburban areas in search of
food, so it’s important to drive cautiously even if your not in a deer-crossing zone.
Use high beams as much as possible at night, especially in deer-active areas.
Don’t count on deer whistles or deer fences to deter deer from crossing roads.
If a deer is struck but not killed by a vehicle, keep a distance as deer may recover and
move on. If a deer does not move on, or poses a public safety risk, report the incident
to a DNR conservation officer or other local law enforcement agency.

A MN campaigner asked us to
remind people to not to open
the door for strangers. You
aren’t being rude, just safe!
Don’t be a VicƟm of a
Door Step Crime!
Do not inform people you
are or will be home alone!
When you are home
alone, ensure windows
and entrances throughout
are secure.
If you arrive home and it
appears your home was
entered, do not invesƟ-
gate alone! Call 911 for
police response to ensure
your home is safe.
Don’t “hide” spare keys in
the “usual” places. Be cre-

who knows the locaƟon.
Consider using a lockbox.
Consider using a code
