River Bluffs Project
Mark Hoiser and Jessica Haglmann of Darts met with Jake and me on
Tuesday this week to introduce us to the River Bluffs Project. Darts has
received grant funding for a three year project to be called River Bluffs.
The project is to help older adults stay in their home longer. This first
trial will involve Seniors from Lilydale, Sun Fish Lake and Mendota
Heights. There will be a fee for membership ranging from $40-90/month
depending on the assistance desired. Membership is hoped to grow to 300
by the end of the trial period. Members will be assisted in any ways they
need but it is expected to range from homemaking to transportation to
shopping to handyman chores etc. The kickoff for the project is expected
to be later this fall.

Mosquito Update
I received a call from a resident that lives near Wentworth Park who told me that she
had two Mosquito Control employees in her yard and wondered why. I called Mos-
quito Control and they told me that this is the time of the year that disease bearing
mosquito’s arrive, in spite of the fact that it has been very dry, those type mosquito’s
are still out there. Mosquito Control found an elevated number of Lacross Encephali-
tis bearing mosquito’s in Wentworth Park (does not mean they are infected) so they
are looking for habitat around the neighborhood and will be treating the area for adult
mosquito’s to try and reduce the risk. When on the phone, Mosquito Control also
told me hat they are also looking for West Nile bearing mosquito’s, some cases are
showing up in animals and 9 in humans. (Only 2 in the metro and non in Dakota
County
Safety Camp
Jake was able to swing by Kaposia Park in South St. Paul to participate in our annu-
al Youth Safety Camp. Safety Camp is put on cooperatively with the Cities of West
St. Paul and South St Paul. A variety of topics are covered to help kids be safe eve-
ryday. Usually the camp has around 150 participants, which Jake thinks they were
close to again this year. Mendota Heights had around 50 kids participating this
year. Teresa Gangelhoff plays a significant role in putting on the camp, with assis-
tance from PD, FD and other community volunteers.
Dakota County Broadband
On Friday morning, Jake attended a subcommittee of the Dakota County Managers’
Group on broadband technology. This group has been working to identify and ad-
dress gaps in technology services available to both residents and businesses in Dako-
ta County. The group discussed whether broadband access should be considered a
part of our community’s “infrastructure” or if it is a luxury item. The group also dis-
cussed how we might be able to collect information on what type of broadband ca-
pacity already exists throughout the County. While the group’s preference is to have
existing communications companies provide this service, each community experi-
ences areas where the service does not meet up with the demand. Jake will continue
to sit in on this committee and make sure that Mendota Heights does not miss out on
an opportunity to serve our residents.
