2008-05-09 Friday NewsSpring Clean-Up a Success The Mendota Heights Spring Clean-Up was held on Saturday at Mendota Plaza. 270 residents registered - if you figure in 15-30 folks who dropped off electronics without checking in, it was the best turnout we have ever had. Just under $1,500 was collected, which will go to defray the costs of disposal. We had a fantastic crew of volunteers, many of whom worked the whole event. The weather also cooperated after a chilly start. Special thanks to Donn Anderson and Sam Kuchinka, for assisting a resident from Fieldstone Dr, whose “one item” ended up being two trailers full of miscellaneous stuff! Here are some rough estimates on what was brought in: One full packer truck (81 mattresses and 60+ sofas) Four full 20 yard dumpsters of miscellaneous rubbish Two full 30 yard dumpsters of scrap metal (roughly 10,000 lbs) One full cage of tire One SEMI load of electronics – 48 pallets of them. F R I D A Y N E W S May 9, 2008 Pandemic Flu – Mass Casualties Meeting Jake attended a meeting on ongoing plans for Mass Casualties in the event of a Pandemic Flu Outbreak. Representatives from five local funeral homes attended the meeting along with officials from local, county and state government. Minnesota currently averages 103 deaths each day. In a Pandemic, the number would likely rise by 536 each day, creating tremendous burden on funeral homes. The County and State have been working to develop plans for removing bodies from homes, temporary morgues, and what Funeral Homes can do today to be better prepared. It was a very interesting session; it was good to see that plans are underway.
