2008-05-30 Friday NewsHUGO DISASTER
Last weekend the City of Hugo was hit with at least one tornado. Mendota
Heights has three employees who live in Hugo, the Larrive, and Stacy
Kaiser. The Larrive live within a couple blocks of the path of the tornado
and their home was severely damaged on the exterior. Broken windows,
siding, roof etc. Stacy was 3 miles from the path, but her roof and cars
were badly damaged by the hail and her gravel driveway was washed out.
This incident caused Mike Aschenbrener and me to think about, what if
this had happened to us. If it had happened to us, the first thing that would
have occurred would be that mutual aid would be called for and they would
work on the disaster until the situation was stabilized. The second action
would be to activate the City’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at the
Fire Department. Finally, the Dakota Incident Management Team would F

be called in to assist the City with recovery efforts. The Dakota County Incident Management
Team consists of up to 32 members from all the municipalities within the County and from a va-
riety of disciplines and specialties. If you are worried about being prepared for this kind of dis-
aster, Dakota County is holding a training session this coming Monday at their Northern Service
Center (see flier attached) to help train staff and City Council Members.
Remember: Outdoor Warning Sirens are a signal to residents to turn on their TV’s or radios to
find out what is going on. The sirens will sound for 3 minutes or until the power goes out. The
normal monthly test sounding is for 45 seconds. When sirens stop sounding it does not mean all
clear. The sirens never announce an all clear.
Grandpa Again! #6
Congratulations to Paul Berg (Code Enforcement Officer) on the birth of his new granddaughter
Darby, weighing in at 8 lbs. 11 oz. and 21 inches long. Darby was born on Thursday, June 29th
a little after noon to Paul’s son Adam and wife Marika. This is Paul’s 6th grandchild. Will there
be a #7??
Par 3 Improvements (Finally)
Plans are finalized, the contracts are signed, and it looks like the improvements to the Par 3
Clubhouse will begin on Monday. Funding for a majority of the project is coming from Dakota
County CDA, as a Community Development Block Grant. Work will include two new handi-
capped accessible bathrooms, new accessible entry doors, and new/resurfaced walkways and pa-
tio. Along with these improvements, we will be residing the clubhouse. As our most frequently
visited public facility, these improvements will make the Par 3 both more comfortable and more
safe for the community. Work should be substantially complete by the end of June.
