SAGE MARKET
Sue and I stopped by the Sage Market this week where we saw Bob Kowalski, who was doing
the final preparations for his “Soft” opening today. Bob invited all the City Staff and Officials to
his Pre-Grand Opening party on Thursday September 28th. He plans on closing his doors to
customers on that Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and starting his private party at 6:00 p.m. On Saturday,
September 30th at 11 a.m. he will have his Grand Opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony for
the general public.
VISIT FROM JAY
Jay Haugen the new Superint endent of Schools for District 197 (Henry Sibley) visited the City
Council meeting this Tuesday to update the City Council on the School District’s ongoing
remodeling project and on their upcoming referendum. With him was School Board Member
Elise Jameson. Jay made a power point presentation with pictures showing what was happening
with the remodeling at all of the School District’s 8 school buildings. The School District had a
bond referendum passed 2 years ago for almost $60 Million which is being used to fund this
work. The remodeling itself is a three year construction process.
Jay informed the Council that their enrollment is up and is currently 4500 students with about
1700 of those at the High School.
He said that the last “Levy for Learning” was approved by the voters four years ago and needs to
be renewed. He said that he has some special personal initiatives that he wants to be funded by
this levy including funds for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) that will
increase the existing Levy by $2 Million.
ARC GUESTS
The ARC meeting this week had State Senator Jim Metzen and State Representative Rick
Hansen in attendance. Among the topics discussed with these legislators was the possibility of
amending the state law to allow for at least one more MAC Member that would represent the
cities directly adjacent to the airport who are most affected by air noise (within the DNL 65 for
those of you who know about noise contours). The City’s legislators were very optimistic about
our chances of getting that legislation passed and worked out a plan of action with the
Commission to try and get the law passed.
Respectfully submitted,
Jim Danielson
City Administrator
