BACK TO WORK
I’m back to work from my injury – although still not whole days and still moving very slowly.
Thanks to the Sunshine Club for the flowers. (I had a lot of time to smell them last week).
JUDY’S LAST DAY
Today was Utility Clerk Judy Wonick’s last day and we had a goodbye luncheon for her at noon.
We all wish Judy the best of luck in Lanesboro, MN running the “Chat and Chew” restaurant.
SIRENS
This week Dakota County had a meeting with the National Weather Service and the media to
discuss their siren activation policy. Dave Gisch, Dakota County’s Emergency Manager was
also on Channel 11 News to talk about sirens and the National Weather Service’s recent change
to allow more than one weather zone per County. Dakota County now has four zones as shown
on the attached map. Before the change by the Weather Service, severe weather occurring in
Lakeville (or anywhere south of Lakeville as far as Northfield) would also mean the sirens would
go off in Mendota Heights – even if the sun was shining here. Now with these four zones, the
siren can be activated in Lakeville without activating them in Mendota Heights. There were 14
activations in Dakota County last year which was a record number. We think that activations in
our area will go down significantly this year with this new system of zones.
It’s also noted that Dakota County has a different activation policy than the other Minnesota
counties do – when the sirens go off in Dakota County, it means we are experiencing severe
weather “turn on the radio or TV to see what is going on” and then make your own decision on
what actions to take. In all other counties when you hear sirens, it means “take cover”.
