WINTER ARRIVES
This Monday morning and Thursday morning, Mendota Heights had winter arrive in the form of two
snow storms and around 18” of snow. The snowstorm on Monday was by far the worst. Tom Olund has
been at the City for 32 years and he feels that this was the worst snowstorm, in all those years, that he has
had to deal with. Public Works had 10 -12” of heavy, wet snow that came at about the worst time of the
day. Public Works started plowing at 5:00 A.M. and did not finish until 9:00 P.M. As a result of the
heavy, heavy snow, we had five break downs, two plows stuck, and we had to assist in “unsticking” cop
cars several times and an ambulance once. There were numerous sanitary sewer lift station alarms that
occurred, with one of them being a power outage. Rich and Tom had to take the City’s portable generator
to pump down sewage from the Northland lift station by Brown College. We also had to run all over
town to track down a hydraulic hose for one of the trucks – the first two places we went to were closed
because of the storm. One of the plow trucks was rear ended (only minor damage) but this also caused a
major delay. We were not alone, i n checking with other cities, I learned that they all had similar pr oblems.
On Thursday, we received another 6”± on top of Monday’s snow. This time, things went according to
plan. We did not receive any complaint calls all day long. Way to go Public Works you are doing a
great job!!
FIRE IN WEST ST. PAUL
The Fire D epartment was called out to provide mutual aid to West St. Paul on March 9th. Our guys stood
by at the fire station while West St. Paul and South St. Paul Fire Departments put out the house fire.
While they were there providing backup, our Fire Department made three medical response runs.
ST. PATRICK’S DAY
Council Member Duggan provided City staff with a St. Patrick’s Day treat this year (usually Council
Member Mary Jeanne Schneeman does). We are very lucky to have two Irish Council Members here at
Mendota Heights. At noon, Council Member Duggan showed up with corn beef and all the trimmings
and treated the City staff members with a St. Patty’s Day lunch. Thanks Ultan!!
SUE
Sue will be in Colorado next week hunting for a house.
Respectfully submitted,
Jim Danielson
