HURRICAN OTIS
According to Paul Douglas, the Twin Cities and Mendota Heights were hit this Tuesday and
Wednesday with a “hurricane”. The storm that we had on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning
this week was the left overs from hurricane Otis that came at us from the Pacific over the Rockies.
The Public Works Garage rain gauge had 5½ inches in it on Wednesday morning. City Hall did not
receive any complaints from residents and only had minimal flooding on a few roads. Public Works
had four people in to open catch basins, deal with intermittent power outages at lift stations and
plow some mud off from the Valley Park Trail. We were lucky and weathered the storm just fine.
ST THOMAS ACADEMY HOMECOMING
Friday night this week, the silence in Mendota Heights was broken by the sound of cannon fire.
St. Thomas Academy parents had arranged to have the old historic cannon from Fort Snelling to be
at their homecoming game with Hill Murray. The cannon was fired after each touch down. Well,
St. Thomas Academy had plenty of touchdowns and that cannon was firing a lot – it fired for five(5)
touchdowns and once at the game’s beginning and end. After the first blast set off all the car alarms
in the parking lot, they aimed the gun progressively higher until it was almost vertical. They
charged the cannon with 2-pounds of powder (maybe they should have cut that back). Many of the
City’s residents wondered what was going on and called WSP dispatch, they also contacted City
Hall with calls and emails. St. Thomas Academy headmaster was contacted on Monday and he
promised us not to fire that cannon again.
CONGRATS TO STEVE
Congratulations go out to new Police Officer Steve Meyer and his wife Kali who had their second
child last Thursday. Hanna Jo Meyer was born at 0614 hours (police time) weighing in at 7 lbs
11 oz and 20½ inches long.
