NATIONAL NIGHT OUT
Next Tuesday August 4th will be this year’s National Night
Out or by it’s new name Minnesota Night to Unite. Starting
at 5:30 p.m. Mendota Heights Police, Fire and Health East
Ambulance will begin making the rounds to attend Mendota
Height’s neighborhood block parties. This is the first year
that there will ot be a big block party at Mendakota Park.
The emphasis is on growing neighborhood parties and
actually addressing the problems. We are hoping to have
around 12 neighborhood parties. Anyone who desires to
schedule a neighborhood party should call Sgt. Brian
Convery at PD.

THURSDAY LUNCH
Former Public Works Director Sue McDermott was in town for a visit this week.
She attended Engineering I, Sam Kuchinka’s wedding on Saturday and had lunch
with us on Thursday at Los Cabos in West St. Paul. Sue told us that she just
passed her probationary period in Avondale as their City Engineer which means
that she has been there for over a year now. Man does time fly!
CITIZEN’S ACADEMY
Spots are filling fast. It will be a 21-hour academy on Thursday evenings begin-
ning on September 17th at 6:00 p.m. The Police Department will be advertizing
openings soon in the paper and all remaining slots will likely fill quickly.
TRANSIT FORUM
On Wednesday Morning, Jake attended a Transit Coordination Forum hosted by
the Dakota County Office of Planning and DARTS at the Dakota County Technical
College. Tom Gillapsy, our State Demographer started the day with an overview
of anticipated demographic trends for the state in the coming years. He stressed
the impact with the Baby Boom generation will have on service providers, and
transit specifically. Following Mr. Gillapsy’s remarks, the crowd was split into 5
groups to brainstorm ideas about what a comprehensive approach to transportation
might look like, and what barriers exist to creating greater transit opportunities.
The event was well attended by Cities, the County, the Chamber of Commerce and
several non-profit organizations. Dakota County will be taking the information
and opinions from the forum, and provide attendees with a summary of their find-
ings. (Note DARTS recent award attached)
