Mosquito Control for July 4th
The Metropolitan Mosquito Control District (Eric) contacted City Offices on Monday asking if the City
required any special areas sprayed prior to Fourth of July celebrations. They said that they had recently
sprayed the Friendly Marsh area, east of Mendakota Park, and would be fogging (at night) Mendakota
Park and Mendakota Golf Course. They were informed that this year's celebration would be similar to the
past few years and any "special" areas identified in prior years should also be fogged.
Just the facts: a. Fifty species of mosquitoes occur in Minnesota
b. Single female can lay 200 eggs at a time - eggs survive for 5 years
c. Mosquitoes can fly up to 20 miles from their larval habitats
d. Mosquitoes do not develop in grass or shrubbery, although adults frequently
rest in these areas during daylight - all require water to complete life cycle
e. Wear long-sleeved, loose fitting clothing outdoors
f. Use bug repellent with DEET. Children should use repellent with no more then 10%
DEET and for adults, no more then 35% DEET. Do not spray face area-spray hands
and rub on face.
g. Avoid wearing perfumes and colognes
Gateway Bank Ground Breaking
On Wednesday morning of this week Mr. John Schrier and Mr. Bruce Downey, owners of Gateway Bank,
held a formal ground breaking ceremony at the NE corner of Dodd Road and Market Street in Town
Center. The ceremony was to thank everyone who has helped them with getting their new start up bank
going and to celebrate that the bank is now under construction.
It was a beautiful day for the event with John, Bruce, Ross Feffercorn, and Mayor Huber all giving
speeches to celebrate the event. John and Bruce’s new start up bank is currently operating out of the
temporary facility located on the Town Green. John Shrier told me that their new bank is doing very well
even in it’s temporary location. The walls of their permanent new home were going up around us during
the ceremony and the building is expected to be completed and ready for occupancy this fall.
Murder Case Overturned
Today’s St. Paul Pioneer Press announced a MN. Supreme Court decision to overturn a murder case
conviction. The murder happened in Mendota Heights in 1999. Dakota County Atty. Backstrom says in
the article that it will be a costly retrial for them. It will also be costly for Mendota Heights. Investigator
Mario Reyes was the lead investigator on the case and worked jointly with Dakota County and the BCA.
Mario tells me that it was a long trial the first time that it was tried and that it will also be the second time.
The evidence and reports have been retained by the courts, but Mario will have to locate all the witnesses,
officers and anyone else associated with the case. He envisions that this will be a very tough job because
the witnesses were transient in nature and some of the officers involved have retired and moved. Anyone
who wants to look the case up can visit www.courts.state.mn.us/opinions/sc/current/OPA031588-
