2009-11-24 Friday NewsNovember 24, 2009 FIRE DEPARTMENT TOUR A tour of the Fire Station and a lesson on the history of the department was on the calendar for the city administrator on Tuesday of this week. Fire Chief John Maczko provided a tour of the station and the equipment used by the department and shared a number of the success stories on how the Mendota Heights Fire Department has been a leader in the state and nation over the years. David and John discussed a num- ber of issues related to the department and how the department operates in Mendota Heights. The 2008 annual report and the 40 year capital equipment needs were shared and reviewed. David will continue his tour around the city and will meet the firefighters in the near fu- ture. Thanks again to Chief Maczko and all of the firefighters for every- thing you do for Mendota Heights. F LEAGUE OF MN CITIES REGIONAL MEETING RUltan Duggan and Jake Sedlacek attended the League of Minnesota Cities Regional Meeting last week in St. Paul. The meeting was very well attended, and started with a roundtable discussion on unique challenges cities are facing, and creative strategies they are employing Iin these tough budget times. Both Jake and Ultan were impressed that every City in the room had a chance to participate. The meeting also included a presentation on how some cities are utilizing social networking sites, and a speech from the LMC President on the D importance of public art. After the LMC meeting, the group discussed and approved the 2010 Legislative Policies for the Association of Metropolitan Municipalities. Both Ultan A and Jake felt that the meeting was time well spent — good information was shared, and there was ample time for networking with elected and appointed officials from around the region. Nicolas was born at 1419 hrs (2:19 p.m.) on Monday, November 23rd and weighed in at 9 pounds 2 ounces and 23 inches long. Mom and baby are doing well. TwwinCitiesocom Nen ota Heights Airport signage project under way Pioneer Press Updated: 11124(2009 12:05:3£3 AM CST Motorists may encounter delays on eastbound Interstate 494 between Minnesota 13 and Pilot Knob Road in Mendota Heights starting today as crews begin foundation and guardrail work, the Minnesota Department of Transportation said. Shoulders will be closed during the project, which is in preparation for new terminal signs near Minneapolis -St. Paul International Airport, MnDOT said. Crews will work from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Wednesday and at other airport approach locations on 1-494 and Minnesota 5 in the coming weeks. — Nick Ferraro Advertisement Print Powered By ; 61 � F< ,;-; ,_ t I Dynamics Federal prosecutor appointed state judge in Hastings By PAUL WALSH, Star Tribune Last update: November 24, 2009 - 8:56 AM A federal prosecutor has been appointed to a state court vacancy in Hastings, the governor's office announced Tuesday morning. Erica H. MacDonald, 42, was chosen by Gov. Tim Pawlenty to join the First District Court and succeed Leslie M. Metzen, who retired in May. MacDonald has been an assistant U.S. attorney in Minneapolis since 2001. She also was a judicial law cleric to Minnesota Court of Appeals Judge Harriet Lansing from 2000 to 2001, an assistant U.S. attorney in Chicago in 2000, an associate attorney with the Kirkland and Ellis law firm in Chicago in 1999, and a judicial law clerk to U.S. District Court Judge James H. Alesia in Chicago from 1997 to 1999. MacDonald earned her law degree from DePaul University College of Law in Chicago in 1997, and her bachelor of arts degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1989. "Erica's combination of intellect, trial skills, management experience and compassion will serve her well as a judge," Pawlenty said in a statement announcing his selection. MacDonald was born in Greenwich, Conn., grew up in Dallas. She lives in Mendota Heights with her husband, Jim, and two sons, Kenny 10, and Mitchell, 7. Metzen, 62, of Sunfish Lake, became the first female judge in the First District when she was appointed in 1986. She won elections in 1988, 1994, 2000 and 2006. She is now senior director of violence prevention for the Community Action Council, bringing together community leaders to identify trends and solutions, and she's promoting education about domestic violence for men and boys. --Paul Walsh - 612-673-4482 Dakota County Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee Opening Former Mendota Heights City Council member and Parks and Recreation Commission member Liz Witt called to advise that she is retiring from the Dakota County Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee. The county will be looking for a replacement committee member from District 3. Liz suggested that anyone who is interested in applying for the position should contact D.C. Commissioner Tom Egan. The Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee (PARAC) makes recommendations to the County Board regarding policies that pertain to the county parks and regional parks and trails located within Dakota County, and provides citizen input into park development plans, user fee schedules, recreation, and other issues related to the parks.
