FIRE DEPARTMENT TOUR
A tour of the Fire Station and a lesson on the history of the department
was on the calendar for the city administrator on Tuesday of this
week. Fire Chief John Maczko provided a tour of the station and the
equipment used by the department and shared a number of the success
stories on how the Mendota Heights Fire Department has been a leader
in the state and nation over the years. David and John discussed a num-
ber of issues related to the department and how the department operates
in Mendota Heights. The 2008 annual report and the 40 year capital
equipment needs were shared and reviewed. David will continue his
tour around the city and will meet the firefighters in the near fu-
ture. Thanks again to Chief Maczko and all of the firefighters for every-
thing you do for Mendota Heights.
F LEAGUE OF MN CITIES REGIONAL MEETING
RUltan Duggan and Jake Sedlacek attended the League of Minnesota Cities Regional Meeting
last week in St. Paul. The meeting was very well attended, and started with a roundtable
discussion on unique challenges cities are facing, and creative strategies they are employing
Iin these tough budget times. Both Jake and Ultan were impressed that every City in the
room had a chance to participate. The meeting also included a presentation on how some
cities are utilizing social networking sites, and a speech from the LMC President on the
D
importance of public art. After the LMC meeting, the group discussed and approved the
2010 Legislative Policies for the Association of Metropolitan Municipalities. Both Ultan
A and Jake felt that the meeting was time well spent — good information was shared, and there
was ample time for networking with elected and appointed officials from around the region.

Federal prosecutor appointed state judge
in Hastings
By PAUL WALSH, Star Tribune
Last update: November 24, 2009 - 8:56 AM
A federal prosecutor has been appointed to a state court vacancy in Hastings, the
governor's office announced Tuesday morning.
Erica H. MacDonald, 42, was chosen by Gov. Tim Pawlenty to join the First District
Court and succeed Leslie M. Metzen, who retired in May.
MacDonald has been an assistant U.S. attorney in Minneapolis since 2001.
She also was a judicial law cleric to Minnesota Court of Appeals Judge Harriet Lansing
from 2000 to 2001, an assistant U.S. attorney in Chicago in 2000, an associate attorney
with the Kirkland and Ellis law firm in Chicago in 1999, and a judicial law clerk to U.S.
District Court Judge James H. Alesia in Chicago from 1997 to 1999.
MacDonald earned her law degree from DePaul University College of Law in Chicago in
1997, and her bachelor of arts degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1989.
"Erica's combination of intellect, trial skills, management experience and compassion
will serve her well as a judge," Pawlenty said in a statement announcing his selection.
MacDonald was born in Greenwich, Conn., grew up in Dallas. She lives in Mendota
Heights with her husband, Jim, and two sons, Kenny 10, and Mitchell, 7.
Metzen, 62, of Sunfish Lake, became the first female judge in the First District when she
was appointed in 1986. She won elections in 1988, 1994, 2000 and 2006.
She is now senior director of violence prevention for the Community Action Council,
bringing together community leaders to identify trends and solutions, and she's promoting
education about domestic violence for men and boys.
