MH Parks and Recreation Commission 12-8-2015 Page 1 CITY OF MENDOTA HEIGHTS DAKOTA COUNTY, MINNESOTA PARKS AND RECREATION MEETING December 8, 2015 The December meeting of the Mendota Heights Parks and Recreation Commission was held on Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at Mendota Heights City Hall, 1101 Victoria Curve. Chair Hinderscheid called to order the parks and recreation commission meeting at 6:30 p.m. The following commissioners were present: Chair Hinderschied, Commissioners: Stephanie Levine, Jack Evans, Joel Paper, David Miller and Michael Toth. Staff present: Recreation Programmer Sloan Wallgren. Approval of Agenda COMMISSIONER LEVINE MADE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE AGENDA; COMMISSIONER PAPER SECONDED THE MOTION. AYES 6: NAYS 0 Approval of Minutes from November 10, 2015 COMMISSIONER LEVINE MADE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE MINUTES FROM THE NOVEMBER 10, 2015 MEETING; COMMISSIONER EVANS SECONDED THE MOTION. AYES 6: NAYS 0 Pollinator-Friendly City Resolution Mr. Wallgren presented the items that would take place if the council decide to approve the resolution to become a pollinator-friendly city. -Have an educational article in the spring issue of the Heights Highlights. -Work with Green River Greening to plant pollinator-friendly plantings. -Establish a plant sharing program. -Provide information on the city website. Chair Hinderscheid suggested that we work with several of the Master Gardener in town. Commissioner Levine also would like to include that we encourage people to avoid using chemicals with neonicotinoids and avoid planting plants that have been treated with neonicotinoid. MHAA Soccer Plan Mr. Wallgren presented the plan to move some of the younger MHAA Soccer players from Kensington Park this fall to Mendakota Park. Mendakota Park has much more parking available and the younger players required much smaller fields that can be placed in the outfields of the softball fields. 2016 Meetings Mr. Wallgren informed the commission that the August and November meetings in 2016 will fall on election nights, and by law the commission cannot meet between 6:00pm and 8:00pm those nights. The commission talked about touring some of the parks in August rather than a meeting. The commission will wait to make a decision on the November meeting. MH Parks and Recreation Commission 12-8-2015 Page 2 Par 3 Report The golf course close on November 11th for the season. The clubhouse will be open in January and February on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00am-3:00pm for people to use the restrooms, rent snowshoes & fat tire bikes or just to stop in and warm up. Total sales for the month of November were $6,216 and total expenses were $7,168. Total sales for the year through November are $167,253 and expenses are $132,963 resulting in a net profit of $34,290 year to date. The projected year end net profit will be $27,000-$29,000. Winter Warming Houses & Rink The warming houses will be open as soon as possible. Staff is in place to flood the rinks and work the warming houses. Mr. Wallgren explained the duties of the winter seasonal employees. He has encouraged the rink attendants to keep the rinks and warming houses clean and organized, shovel snow when it accumulates and organize pickup games of hockey when there are kids there. Commission Comments Commissioner Miller thanked staff and Chair Hinderscheid for all of their work. Commissioner Levine also thanked staff and the other commissioners for all of their work and encouraged people to get out and use the parks and trails. Commissioner Toth thanked staff and wished everyone a happy holiday. Commissioner Paper was excited for all of the upcoming winter activities. Commissioner Evans looked up election information and told everyone that the November elections are held on the first Tuesday in November after the first Monday, which is why it falls on November 8th. Chair Hinderscheid wished everyone a happy holidays and was glad to see the golf course do so well this year. COMMISSIONER PAPER LEVINE A MOTION TO ADJURN THE MEETING. AYES 6: NAYS 0 The meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m. Respectfully Submitted by Sloan Wallgren DATE: January 12, 2016 TO: Parks and Recreation Commission FROM: Sloan Wallgren, Recreation Program Coordinator SUBJECT: Winter Recreation Programs RECREATION PROGRAMS Winter Activities at the Mendota Heights Par 3 The clubhouse at the Par 3 will be open 10:00am-3:00pm on Saturdays and Sundays in January and February. We will offer fat tire bikes and snowshoes for rent ($5.00 each). Again this year we will be creating a cross country ski trail, planned to open in January. We will also have the restrooms available. Skating Lesson Program Our Winter Skating Lesson program begins on Saturday January 9th. We have 41 kids registered for the program, which is big increase over past winters. Warming Houses The warming houses at Friendly Hills Park, Marie Park and Wentworth Park opened on January 1st for the season. The warming houses will remain open as long as weather permits. The warming houses will be open: Weekdays 4 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Saturdays 9 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Sundays Noon – 6 p.m. School Vacation Days Noon– 8:00 p.m. Christmas/New Year’s Eve Noon – 4:00 p.m. Christmas Closed New Year’s Day 12 – 8:00 p.m. DATE: January 12, 2016 TO: Parks and Recreation Commission FROM: Sloan Wallgren, Recreation Program Coordinator SUBJECT: Spring/Summer Recreation Activities Update Staff has been busy planning and coordinating recreation programs and activities for the spring and summer. Our information for programs will go to the newsletter designer at the end of January, and will then go to print in mid-February and finally will be delivered to homes at the end of February. Registration for summer programs will begin on March 14th. Programs that we will again be offering will include: Golf Camps Jr. Golf Leagues, Women’s Golf Leagues and New Senior Golf League Tennis Leagues and Lessons Summer Playground Program Thursday Field Trips Tuesday Teen Trips Cliff Timm Fishing Derby Safety Camp Skateboard Camps Adult Softball Leagues Parks Celebration Puppet Wagon Summer Playhouse Theatre Music in the Park
