2010-06-11 Friday NewsMM AA&AAAA June 11, 2010 Fourth of July Fireworks The City Council will consider approving participation in the annual Fourth of July fireworks with Mendakota Country Club at their meet- ing on June 16, 2010. The 2010 event will be very similar to the events held in previous years. The fireworks will start just after dusk and there will be plenty of good viewing locations around the city. Thank you in advance to the Police, Fire and Public Works Depart- ments for the work that they do in supporting this event. Please get out and support this great event. The city and Mendakota Country Club both put a lot of work into this event so the citizens can enjoy a great show without traveling far from home. Mendota Heights in the News FMendota Heights has been in the news a number of times in the past few weeks. In case you missed it here are some of the stories that appeared in the local news. A R group of students from Visitation returned from Guatemala after a tropical storm and volcano eruption left them stranded. Luckily they made it back in time for their graduation last week. In addition, Mendota Heights resident and St. Paul Police I spokesperson Paul Schnell was appointed police chief in Hastings earlier this week. Congratulations to Chief Schnell on his appointment. Finally a thank you goes out to the members of the Police Department for the professional manner in which they D handled their work this week. The public notification meeting and the death of a Min- neapolis police officer in our city were handled in a manner that everyone can be A proud of. These were two tough issues to deal with, your efforts did not go unno- ticed. Y 2011 City Budget City staff members turned in their first version of department budgets to the city admin- istrator last week. This first "draft" of the budget was reviewed by the City Administra- tor, Finance Director and City Clerk this week. There are a number of points to be N checked in the budget document before each department comes in and presents their budget. The first draft of the budget is significantly over what staff is estimating will be allowed for an increase in the tax levy under levy limits. Once the first draft is formally E reviewed, the city administrator will hold a status report meeting to share with inter- ested staff members where we are on the 2011 budget. A number of these will be held Wthroughout the year. �+ Ribbon Cutting �7 City representatives attending a ribbon cutting and open house at Northwestern Mutual on Thursday afternoon. This new financial business moved to Mendota Heights from Eagan in April and is located on Northland Drive. A large crowd of businesses owners, company staff and residents were in attendance at the ribbon cutting event. This busi- ness is a very impressive addition to our community. June 11, 2010 Thank You A big thank you goes out to all of those who were involved in the work in putting together the 5K Run/Walk and the annual Parks Celebration Day that were held on Saturday, June 5, 2010. The events were a success even if the weather could have cooperated a little more. Thank you to all of the city staff members, council members and commission members who put in work towards these events and attended some or all of the activities on Saturday. Mendota Heights Road Closure Mendota Heights Road at Visitation Drive starting Monday, June 21, 2010 to allow for the construction of the roundabout at this location. The road will be closed between three and six weeks to allow for project completion. The detour for the closure will take vehicles to Wagon Wheel Trail to get between Dodd Road and Lexington Avenue. Please plan your trips accordingly if you use Mendota Heights Road. Thank you in advance for your patience during the construction phase of this project. The caller had just left but his sibling was still on scene with Dad. Dad was extremely intoxicated and according to the caller breaking things in the home. When Officer Larrive arrived he confirmed that the man was drunk but nothing other than a verbal screaming match occurred. Clear after parties calmed down. AOA Pursuit Wednesday 0140 hours South Saint Paul Police Sgt Wicke was in pursuit of a fleeing vehicle on 1-494 W(B at a high rate of speed. Officer Mike Shepard had monitored the pursuit as it was called out on the radio and positioned himself in front the pursuit. When Sgt Wicke called for the "stop sticks" he was able to get them in front of the bad guy's car, deflating his tires. The pursuit ended in Plymouth with an arrest the suspect made it a long way with missing tires. No squads or personnel were injured. Disturbance Thursday 0116 hours Officer Mike Shepard responded to a call for assistance at a local motel. A woman and her sister were hiding out from her estranged husband. The woman heard a knock at the door and was sure they had been found out; she immediately called 911 reporting someone was breaking down the door. Officer Shepard worked with the employees to verify that there were no intruders in the motel and that the two women were safe. Turtle Thursday 1638 hours A cellular caller reported a large turtle in the road blocking traffic. Do we have really turtle's here that are big enough to block traffic? When Officer Patrick arrived on scene it had safely made its way into a neighboring yard. Turtle has been identified and extra patrols requested for future obstruction incidents. O Suspicious Chief & Administrator Thursday 1701 hours Concerned caller reported a suspicious party in a black vehicle driving slowly. He reported to Officer Jen Fordham that squads were also in the area multiple times in the past few days and was a concerned for what might be going on. The caller was pleased to learn the reason. Earlier in the day the UPS driver had reported that there was a speed bump on the road wondering if the City would begin putting them in other locations. The City Administrator drove there and found the speed bump. He pulled the bump out of the road and few hours later Chief Aschenbrener swung through to check the area. There were a '/ dozen of the little motorized cars in the yards when the area was checked — a baby car party! Whoever put the speed bump there did it for the safety of the little kiddies driving their little buggies on the road. Which is never safe! Pool Party Thursday 2256 hours Neighbor called to report a loud pool party. Officer Mike Shepard arrived to find a group of high school seniors having fun. Mother Nature ended the party by raining on it no further complaints. -2- 6/11/2010 Sick Cared For/ Damage Friday 2356 hours Officer's Shepard, VonFeldt, Fordham and Sgt Petersen responded to a call from the utility company about a customer who was threatening to kill himself. Upon arrival they spoke with the homeowner and immediately smelled a strong smell of gas. The party was brought outside to safety and MHFD was immediately called. Inspection revealed the power and gas were tampered with and it was just a matter of time before everything exploded. The spouse and children were located and everyone was safe and unharmed. The utility company will repair the damages and notify Investigator Reyes of the cost of the repairs. Juvenile Complaint Saturday 0335 hours Homeowner called to report that teenage kids just shot ketchup all over the cars and driveway. They jumped into a small brown Ford and sped off. Officer VonFeldt checked the area but was not able to locate the kids. Bike vs. Pedestrian Accident Sunday 0915 hours A woman came into MHPD to report being run over by a bicyclist. She had been walking in a local park and was struck by a bicyclist, fell and lost consciousness. When she came to, two bicyclists were hovering over her and wanted to call 911, but the victim, a bit disoriented, told them to go ahead and leave her alone. However, she did eventually go to the ER and actually not only required some stitches, but also found out her wrist and one of her toes were fractured. Unfortunately, the victim is unable to recall a description of the bicyclists, just their first names. A report was made so that the City could be notified of an incident occurring on the trail system. Officers are attempting to locate the cyclists. Entitlement/Theft Monday 1515 hours Officer Bobby Lambert responded to residence on report of some stolen guns. Upon arrival, he learned from the homeowner/father that his son had removed some guns from his home without permission. Follow-up with the suspect/son revealed he took the guns so that he could sell them, since his father wouldn't pony up money the son felt he was owed. His brother had reportedly received some money from the father, and the son felt he was also owed the same amount of money. The son was advised to find and if necessary, purchase back the guns and return them to the owner; case remains civil unless further criminal activity occurs. Caught in the Act Wednesday 1201 hours We've had several reports of thefts again in the City — a theft from mailbox (again, don't mail anything of value from your curbside mailbox), theft from vehicles and theft of gas. However, upon being called to a possible theft in progress, officers apprehended two suspects. The suspects had reportedly entered the homeowner's vehicle and had nearly stolen something, but the theft was stopped short by the homeowner's barking dog. The homeowner had evidently given chase and was able to provide a solid description of the vehicle and a license plate. Officers were able to catch up with the vehicle, initiated a traffic stop and proceeded to conduct a search to arrest. One ultimately was taken to jail and another was given a citation and released to a parent. A good example why you should always call on suspicious activity. N E W S LETTER Public Works Engineering Code Enforcement Public Works June 11, 2010 The Parks Crew helped set up and clean up after the Parks Celebration and the 5K run. The grills were cleaned in the parks. Tree limbs were trimmed up in Valley Park. All equipment was cleaned and washed. Rich did a sanitary sewer inspection at 635 Highway 13 and 744 Woodridge Drive. He also fixed a leaking toilet at City Hall. He also cleaned and prepared fire hydrants for painting in the Kensington area. The Streets Crew cut down and cleaned up six dead elm trees from City right-of-way on Fourth Avenue. Tom called George at 2:00 A.M. on June 4th to report a fire truck was stuck on John Street. George came in and brought the road grader to the stuck truck and pulled it out. The Streets Crew gave Cliff a hand working on the front end of the John Deere tractor backhoe. John Ambrose fabricated a bracket for the alternator on the fire rescue truck. They attended a Safe Assure meeting at Public Works. The apron area along 1957 Walsh Lane was filled in with black dirt and seed. Around the driveway at 671 Arcadia Drive the area was also filled in with black dirt and seed. Engineering Highway 55 Mendota Heights Road Intersection - After lengthy negotiations to no avail with a commercial property owner on securing road easements the City has decided the best course of action will be to alter the proposed design without the need for the agreement. The project is proposed to be advertised next week with an anticipated late July or early August start date. Mendota Heights Road Roundabout - Construction of the roundabout is scheduled to begin on Monday June 14th. Mendota Heights Road is scheduled to be closed for approximately 4-6 weeks. Detour signs will be posted. 2010 Reconstruction - After a rainy week the contractor only accomplished some clean up work as they are waiting on Xcel Energy to complete the replacement of the gas main. The contractor is anxious to get in and start restoring the streets as soon as possible. Water Tower Rehab - The containment system for the tower should be in place next week. Structural modifications are nearly complete as well as painting of the interior. The contractor is working with OSHA on worker safety due to a hazardous chemical that may be present in the paint.
