2015-08-11 Parks and Rec Comm Minutes CITY OF MENDOTA HEIGHTS DAKOTA COUNTY, MINNESOTA PARKS AND RECREATION MEETING August 11, 2015 The August meeting of the Mendota Heights Parks and Recreation Commission was held on Tuesday, August 11, 2015 at Mendota Heights City Hall, 1101 Victoria Curve. Chair Hinderscheid called to order the parks and recreation commission meeting at 6:30 p.m. The following commissioners were present: Chair Hinderscheid, Commissioners: Ira Kip, Stephanie Levine, Michael Toth, Jack Evans, David Miller, and Joel Paper and Student Representatives Joe Quehl. Staff present: Recreation Programmer Sloan Wallgren. Approval of Agenda COMMISSIONER PAPER MADE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE AGENDA; COMMISSIONER LEVINE SECONDED THE MOTION. AYES 7: NAYS 0 Apprival of Minutes from July 14, 2015 COMMISSIONER PAPER MADE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE MINUTES FROM THE JULY 14, 2015 MEETING; COMMISSIONER LEVINE SECONDED THE MOTION. AYES 7: NAYS 0 Marie Park Hockey Rink and Warming House Mr. Wallgren informed the commission that the Marie Park Hockey Rink would soon be striped for pickleball and basketball. The surface has already been painted gray and will not be lined for new sports during the summer months. The construction of the warming house at Marie Park will begin very soon. Par 3 Report Mr. Wallgren informed the commission that the golf course is doing great so far this year. The addition of footgolf has been a huge success. Many of the golf leagues will begin to finish near the end of August, but there is still plenty of time left for golf this season. Mr. Wallgren informed that commission that staff stained the maintenance building at the Par 3 during the month of July, to bring back its beautiful natural color. Financial data will be provided at a future date. Off-Leash Dog Area Mr. Wallgren informed the commission that the city council is planning on moving forward with the temporary off-leash dog area near Pilot Knob. Mr. Wallgren informed the commission that staff is getting options and pricing for fencing, and that the fence would be installed near the end of September. Mr. Wallgren also provide the commission with a list of rules for the off-leash area. Commissioner Levine would like to see the works “healthy and vaccinated” added to the rules, also the age requirement for unsupervised children should be changed from 18 to 12 or 16. MH Parks and Recreation Commission 8-11-2015 Page 1 Announcements Mr. Wallgren announced that the Mendota Heights Athletic Association is new taking registrations for basketball. The Sibley Area Hockey Association is also taking registration for their programs. Commission Comments Commissioner Kipp thought it was a good meeting and glad to see the golf course doing well. Commissioner Levine thanked the council for all the work involved with establishing a dog park. Commissioner Paper was glad to hear the golf course is doing well. He also complimented MHAA for having over 600 kids participating in soccer this fall. Commissioner Paper also mentioned that he West St. Paul Splash Pad is now open. Commissioner Toth wanted to give credit to councilmen Polvony and Norton for seeing a better vision for the area that will be an Off-Leash Dog Area. Commissioner Miller thought we had a good discussion and was glad to see the golf course doing well. Chair Hinderscheid was glad to see people using the new tennis courts at Ivy Hills Park and wanted to thank everyone for everything that the commission has accomplished so far this year.
