A Busy 4th of July Weekend…
Deputies responded to a call of a three-year-old girl in Vermillion Township who had
fallen into a bonfire on the 4th of July. The little girl sustained second and third
degree burns and was taken by air ambulance to Regions Hospital in St. Paul. She
was later listed in stable condition. Responding from the DCSO were Deputies Mike
Vikesland and Dan Hoover and Sergeant Jeff Leopold.
The DCSO assisted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office on the report of a “possible
drowning” on the St. Croix River. The man was swimming with his family when he
was last seen. After an exhaustive search of the area by Washington County and
other agencies, the man’s body was later recovered approximately 25 yards from the
shore line. Sergeant Jim Iliff and Park Ranger Josh Schauer assisted with the
search.
Deputies also assisted at a fatal crash in Cannon Falls. A Minnesota Trooper
responding to an accident with injuries collided with a car. Two people in the car
were killed and the trooper was transported by air ambulance to Regions Hospital in
St. Paul. Special Duty Deputy Matt Regis and Deputy Tim Gonder assisted at
the scene.
A driving complaint resulted in the arrest of a female for Driving While Impaired and
a male for Disorderly Conduct. The Dakota Communications Center received multiple
calls of a driver “all over the road” on 316 near Hastings. The vehicle pulled into a
local business and the woman ran from the car into the business. An employee
intervened and was rewarded with the male spitting in his face. Both were taken
into custody. Responding from the DCSO were Sergeant Scott Durdall and
Deputies Chris Hamblin and Ryan Holmquist.
A Piece of DCSO History…
The Sheriff’s Office recently
received the generous donation
of a painting depicting the Old
Courthouse located in downtown
Hastings, which for many years
was home to Dakota County
offices (including divisions of the
DCSO). The building housed
county and court offices from
1871 until it was sold to the City
of Hastings in 1993 as the site of
the current City Hall. The
deputy walking from a vintage
1959 Ford squad car is Retired
Captain Steve Theriault. The
artist is Larry Landis and this

Be On the Lookout (BOLO)…
Over the past two weeks, the Sheriff’s Office
has handled a number of home burglaries in
the southern Dakota County area. The
burglaries typically occurred during the
daytime and thieves are taking money,
jewelry, and other property. While
progress is being made in the
investigations, Sheriff Dave Bellows
urges everyone to take precautions by
locking their doors, windows, and cars.
Several of the burglaries happened when
the homeowner left their residence to
“run to the store” or for some other short
errand. Next to “locking up,” the best defense against burglary
and other crimes are neighbors watching out for each other. When you see
something suspicious, make a call to 9-1-1. While many times your call to police
turns out to be unfounded, we still want to be called. Better to handle nine false
alarms than miss the burglary in progress.
A Day at the Beach, Until…
Deputy Chris Hamblin was patrolling along Etter’s Landing when he observed a car
pull into the landing. Chris did a routine license check on the car, which revealed it
was a reported stolen out of St. Paul. After requesting assistance, Chris, along with
Special Duty Deputy Matt Regis and Deputies Ryan Holmquist, Jen Lenarz,
and Matt Lohmann stopped the car and arrested the driver, who admitted to stealing
the vehicle. Nice job by Chris and all.
Boy, Was That a Wrong Number:
Recently, Chief Deputy Tim Leslie received a call from an individual purporting to
be with the Internal Revenue Service. The caller identified himself as Agent Shaun
White, Badge Number 7656, of the IRS and said Tim had fraudulently filled out his
taxes, making him subject to criminal penalties. Tim was advised if he did not
cooperate with the caller’s instructions his name would be forwarded to the County
Sheriff and his employer. In Tim’s case, this is one and the same. The call was a
scam in an attempt to extort money. Tim learned from a friend at the IRS that over
60,000 calls of this nature have been received and people have paid money thinking
they were in trouble. Chief Deputy Leslie cautions anyone receiving a call to check
it out first. Don’t be pressured into sending money, call and verify first. The story
was carried by KARE-11 and the link can be found below:
